What a week!

On Monday in algebra we will be taking the chapter 8 test. We will then move into factoring!! YEA!!!!!

In math we will take the Chapter 8 test in two parts. Wednesday we will test over sections 8.6-8.8 and on Thursday we will test over sections 8.1-8.5. Students will be allowed to create a note card to use on each day of the test. (This means two note cards total, one for each day.)

Also this week we will be participating in the Cancer Smashers fundraiser. Ours school is in a friendly competition against Eisenhower to see who can raise the most money. GO SPARTANS!!!!

Finally the first snow is here!!! I hope that everyone has a weekend filled with activities that are enhanced by the recent snow fall.

Next week in Algebra we will be finishing up Chapter 8 on Exponential Functions. We are finally getting into to the problem solving and practical applications in this chapter, the part that I enjoy most! Students should also begin working on their chapter 8 project about exponential growth.

In math, we will also be wrapping up Chapter 8 on polygons. We will finish the week by studying transformations of polygons. Our test will be the following week.

I hope that everyone has had a great start to the new year! We have hit the ground running with new chapters in both math classes this week.

In Algebra, we started chapter 8, which covers exponent operations and exponential functions. We spent this past week making sure that students have solid skills in applying the properties of exponent operations. Next week we will move onto the application of exponential rules in exponential functions. zStudents will also begin our Chapter 8 problem packet. This time it is more of an investigation than a set of word problems. With cold and flu season in full swing, it is the perfect time to study how antibiotics work!!

In Math, we have also started Chapter 8. This chapter deals with shapes and their properties. Students have been putting their equation solving skills from the last chapter to use this week by finding missing angle measures. They will continue using these skills throughout the rest of the chapter. Next week will move onto quadrilaterals and other polygons.

Monday and Tuesday students will be taking the MAP test in their social studies classes. Students have met with their homebase teachers to set goals for this upcoming test!

In math, we are also preparing for a test on Wednesday over Chapter 6. Students will be assessed on their equation solving ability in this chapter.

The next two weeks in Algebra are very busy. We will be finishing Chapter 7, as well as, reviewing for and taking the Semester Final. You should have received an email from me regarding proficiency credit in regards to the exam. Below I have listed important dates.

I can't believe we have already entered the holiday season! I know this is a busy time of year for everyone and I try to keep homework over breaks to a minimum.

Coming up this week in algebra, we will be finishing Chapter 7. Students were given Chapter 7 Problem Packets on the Tuesday before break. Those will be due the day of the Chapter 7 test, tenatively set for Tuesday, December 6th. After we wrap up Chapter 7, we will begin reviewing for the semester final, which will be given on Tuesday, December 13th and Wednesday, December 14th. This final covers Chapters 1-7 and will be used to help with placement in high school. I will share more information regarding this test in a later blog post.

In math, we will continue in Chapter 6: Solving Equations. We will be building each day on what we have previously learned. It is more important than ever that students are doing homework so they do not fall behind. If you see any zeros in the gradebook, that howework should be made up ASAP to ensure that students understand material before a quiz or test.

This week in Algebra we will be finishing the lessons in Chapter 6. We will take a quiz over lessons 6.4-6.5 on Tuesday this week and and begin the chapter review on Thursday. Students should have little, to no, homework over the long weekend! Just as a note, I am planning on having the students take this test before the end of the trimester.

In math, we have a busy week. We are continuing to learn about operations with numbers involving exponents. We will also spend Wednesday reviewing for Thursday's Trimester test. Students may pick up Thursday's homework on Wednesday to reduce what they will be responsible for over the holiday weekend.

This week in Algebra we will finish Chapter 5 with a test Tuesday. Students will also turn in their Chapter 5 Problem Solving Packet on Tuesday. Please remember that part C of number 10 is extra credit:) We will begin chapter 6 on Wednesday and should have our first quiz on sections 6.1-6.3 Friday.

In math, we will be continuing our review of fractions this week. This will include an extra credit assignment relating to fractions and a test on Thursday. Also, we will begin preparing for our Trimester Test which will be given on November 10th and covers every thing we have learned so far this school year. Students will receive a review packet this week for this test.

This past week was a very busy week with two days off for students and the Explore test. I am looking forward to getting back into the swing of things next week with a full schedule.

In Algebra we will begin Chapter 5, which continues our study of linear functions. By then end of this chapter students should master their knowledge of linear functions. Students should also be prepared for another problem solving packet where they are applying the concepts we are learning in class.

In math we will be finishing up Chapter 3, which is solving equations. Students have been doing a pretty good job so far in class during whiteboard practice with this process. Hopefully I will see some great scores from Friday's (10/14) quiz!!

I can not believe how quickly this year is going! I have really enjoyed getting to know this group of students. They are truly an energetic group of kids with a lot of personality!!

On Tuesday in math we will finish Chapter Two with a test. Students have been having a great time using the MIMIO pad in class this week to do work on the board from their desks. It is great to see this technology in action and it frees me up to circulate the room more! After Tuesday we will move onto solving equations in Chapter Three.

In Algebra we have begun our study of Linear Functions. We have been learning about slope and intercepts and will continue to make connections between linear equations and their graphs. We will be tying this to the real world frequently, so that students can see how math is used in the real world. (Today we talked about slope and where that is important in the real world. Student gave some great examples!!)

Which is a better deal for carpet, $5/square foot or $15/square yard? Hopefully students in 8th grade math can now tell you and explain how not to get tricked by retailers!! With our first chapter test under our belts in math, we will be moving on to Chapter 2 this week. This chapter covers integers and operations within this set of numbers. This chapter fits nicely with the golf trip and over and under par. Students should be ready for a quiz over the basic operations of these numbers and their applications on Thursday, September 22nd.

In Algebra, we are in the middle of our chapter on equations. We have taken their knowledge of solving equations and "upped the ante" with more complex equations involving distributing and variables on both sides. We have been trying to avoid common mistakes like not distributing the negative to all terms when solving. I was also impressed by some students remembering how to clear the fractions to make the equations easier to solve. This week we will be focusing on percents and ending the week with a chapter 3 test!

For those of you who attended Curriculum Night and are wondering about the answer to the Question of the Week, it is Daniel.

Question: Two friends were driving from there home to Manchester. Kevin Drove the first 90 miles and then Daniel took over the remainder of the journey. On the way back, Kevin drove to begin with and Daniel took over the last 100 miles. Who drove the most?

Reasoning: Kevin drove the first 90 miles and Daniel then drove the unknown distance on the way there. On the way back, Kevin drove 10 miles less of the unknown distance because Daniel drove 10 miles more of the last leg than Kevin did on the way there. (100-90) So, no matter the unknown distance, Kevin drove less.

In Algebra next week we will finish the first chapter. We will have test on Friday over this chapter. As a look into the future, there will be no pre-test over Chapter Two. We will only spend one day reviewing two concepts from this chapter before we move onto Chapter Three.

In Math we will continue to work in chapter one. The main focus next week will be on finding area and using formulas. For future planning, the Chapter One test will most likely fall at the end of the week of the 12th.

I am looking forward to going to Irons Oaks with this class on Tuesday!!

1 Mile Run

The 8th grade teachers decided to join their students in "the mile" in PE today. It was great running with our students and I think we even inspired a few to run a little faster so they didn't get beat by one us!!

This week we will start setting our routines for the year in math. By the end of the week students should know what my expectations are in all aspects of math class.

On Tuesday we will be taking MAP tests during math class. This will give me a good idea where students are academically in math and allow me to better tailor my instruction to meet their needs.

In Algebra we will start with Chapter One. Since much of this chapter is review, I have compacted it into a few days. This is done with much of the first few chapters. I also offer pre-tests on this material as a way for students to move beyond material they have already mastered. Students will not be allowed to use calculators for these chapters.

In Math we also will be working in Chapter One. Most of this material should be review and should get the students minds thinking about math again. This is a time where they are setting up habits and showing me what they know, so it is important that they take this review seriously.

What a busy week this week!! I am definitely looking forward to resting over spring break.

In algebra, we will begin Chapter 11. This chapter is one of the most useful chapters for geometry next year.

In math, we are finishing our chapter on percents (Chapter 7). We will have a test over this chapter on Thursday of this week. Your child should now be able to find discounts and tips without using the calculator on their phone!!

This week in Algebra we will finish Chapter 10 (Quadratic Functions) with a test on Friday. Students should focus their studying on 10.6, completing the square, as this is where they tend to struggle most!

In math, we will continue to work through Chapter 7, Ratios, Rates and Percents. Part of this week will be spent on tricks for mental math with percents. Hopefully by the end of the week students will be able to estimate tip and sale prices without a calculator!!

This week is ISAT week for all students. Due to changes in the schedule to accommodate the testing, classes will not meet every day.

In algebra, we will continue in Chapter 10, Quadratic Functions. We have been focusing on the graph aspect of these functions and will continue to relate the functions to their graphs throughout the chapter.

In math, we are going to begin Chapter 7, Ratios, Rates and Percents. We will work on applying these skills to real life situations, especially the percents. By the end of this chapter, students should be able to estimate percentages WITHOUT a calculator.

Super Hero Day!

Today was Super Hero Day at Lakeview. The math teachers were "Math Heroes". It was great to see all of the students in their costumes.

In Algebra next week we will be finishing up Chapter 8. We will be working on an in-class project in the beginning of the week dealing with exponential growth. Friday will be the Chapter 8 test.

In math, we will continue to study geometry and measurement. We will be focusing on transformations.

This past week was a great first week back to school in 2011!

In Math, we began Chapter 8 which covers angle, shapes and measurements. Students are off to a great start in this chapter.

I know the students are looking forward to their winter break as much as I am. I can't wait to spend two weeks celebrating the holidays with my family and friends. But, before that begins we have to wrap things up in math:)

This week in Algebra, we will be taking the Semester Final. We have been preparing for this the last several days and I am sure that the students will do well!

In math, we have one lesson left in our study of equations and inequalities. We will have a shortened test next Thursday due to the shortened schedule on that day. When we get back from break we will begin studying geometry and measurement.

This week in Algebra we will be taking the Chapter 7 test. Finishing the first seven chapters brings us to the semester final. This final is the final that DGS requires our students take as part of the recommendation process. Student's grades will be recorded on their recommendation form, as well as be counted as a grade for Trimester 2. It is important that students prepare for this exam, as it is the best indicator to the high school as to whether or not the student has a solid understanding of the first sememster of Algebra. We will spend Thursday the 9th through Monday the 13th reviewing in class. Student's will be taking the exam on Tuesday, December 14th and Wednesday, December 15th.

In math we continue to study equations. We should be finished with Chatper 6 before break.

I can't believe it is almost Thanksgiving and that fall is quickly turning to winter!

This week in Algebra we are finishing Chapter 6. Students will be taking their Chapter 6 test on Thursday and we will jump into the beginning of Chapter 7, Systems of Equations, before break. This is a great chapter and is filled with real world applicatoins, AKA problem solving.

In math this week we will be starting to solve complex equations. Before winter break, students will be expert equations solvers.

This week in Algebra we started Chapter 5 which covers Linear Equations. We will be busy next week learning about the different ways in which a linear equation may be written. We will be focusing on problem solving throughout these lessons.

In math, we have finished Chapter 3. We will take the Chapter 3 Test next Tuesday and then move into a review of fractions. Hopefully our review of fractions will stop students from groaning every time they see one!

First of all I hope everyone enjoys their Monday off from school. The weather is supposed to be BEAUTIFUL this weekend.

The week of October 12th is going to be a busy one for 8th graders! All 8th graders will take the Explore text on Wednesday, October 13th. This test is used to help make recommendations for high school placement in math, English and biology.

In Algebra we will finish up Chapter 4 with a test on Friday!

In Math we will continute working in Chapter 3. This week we will spend time write equations (yes, word problems) and working with geometric formulas.

I can't seem to get over how quickly this school year is moving. It seems like just yesterday I was meeting this group of students for the first time, and here I am thinking about turning on my heat at home!

This week in Algebra we will continue reviewing what students knew about Linear Functions and really start building on that knowledge. We will definitely be learning new material from here on out and I am really excited about it. It is great to see their wheels turning! This class has been asking some really thoughtful questions already and I love to see their interest and enthusiasm.

In math, we are finishing up Chapter 2 with a test on Tuesday. I am proud of how well the students have been coping without the use of calculators in this chapter. They aren't used to being without them, but they have not really complained and have done well. (Maybe we should go the whole year;) We will start Chapter 3 on Wednesday and will be solving equations.

This week is a short one....FOR STUDENTS!! I am sure all of my students are looking forward to a day off on Friday and will hopefully take some time to enjoy the DGS Homecoming parade on Friday afternoon.

For the days we are here, Algebra students will be finishing up Chapter 3 (solving equations) with a test next Monday.

Students in all of the rest of my classes will be working through Chapter 2: Integer Operations. We will really be stretching their mental math skills because calculators are banned in this chapter. Students should not be using a calculator at home for this entire chapter!

I am looking forward to meeting the parents of my students Monday night. Hopefully we will have a good turn out for our annual Open House. It is a great time to meet all of your child's teachers and get a feel for what your child will be doing in 8th grade.

In Algebra this week we will review solving equations. We will move very quickly through Chapter three and solving equations. We really push the review material quickly so we can get to the fun of Linear Functions!

In Math, we have almost finished Chapter 1. We will review the first part of the week for the Chapter 1 Test, which will be on Thursday. I have really been impressed with the students and their work ethic so far this year. Keep up the good work!!

I have really enjoyed this week and getting to know this class of 8th graders. We are now moving at full speed through our curriculum and the students are doing GREAT.

In math, we will finish up Chapter 1 next week and probably have a test the following week. We will be talking about how to study for math next week in preparation for the test.

In Algebra, we will take the Chapter 1 test Tuesday and do a small part of Chapter Two and move onto Chapter Three the following week!

Ask anyone who knows me and they would tell you how much I love teaching middle school. I can't say that I have ever been more proud to be a teacher than I have this week. Our students have been bringing in money for Ride Janie Ride. (Two of the recipients of Ride Janie Ride's fundraising efforts are directly linked to our school district.) Students have been doing everything they can to raise money for this effort and have brought in a significant amount of money. On Monday, people from Ride Janie Ride will be coming to Lakeview to be presented with our donation. I am expecting surprise on both the students and recipients parts when we present the check. What an awesome feeling, we are so proud of our students.

Students have been collecting money this week for Ride Janie Ride, an organization that selects three cancer patients as recipents each year for their fundraising efforts. Our students have collected over $1900 in our first week and will continue collecting through next Friday. Each motorcycle displayed in our lobby represents $5 that has been collected. The gold motorcycles are from 6th grade, the green are from 7th grade and the blue are from 8th grade. I am so impressed with our students efforts for this event! My homebase, in combination with Mrs. Ohlander's homebase, have organized a fundraiser for the Ride Janie Ride foundation. This is an organization which raises money for people stricken with blood cancers. Two of this year's recipients have connections to our school district. ISATS ARE OVER!!

After testing all last week, we are ready to move into the final stretch of 8th grade.

In Algebra we are just starting Chapter 10 which continues our study of Quadratic Equations. Students will be spending time working with the graphs of these functions.

In Math we are picking back up with Linear Functions. This will include a review of what we covered before ISATs, as well as some newer material.

This week in Algebra we have started factoring. This is definitely one of my favorite topics to teach students. I love to watch them think!!

In math, we will begin an introduction to Linear Functions tomorrow. We will study this more in depth after ISATS.

Congratulations to the Scholastic Bowl team for their victory Monday over Burr Ridge! The team won 301 to 64. Anyone is welcome at our next home match Monday, February 22nd.

Boy, this was a short week for me!! Monday I started feeling sick and I spent Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday in bed. I made it back to school on Friday, with A LOT of work to catch up on. I was lucky enough to have Mrs. Guinand, Lakeview's former math teacher, as my sub, so I knew math was being taught in my absence!! I have caught up on entering grades except for the quiz that was taken on Friday.

Many students have missing homework assignments, while most are only worth 3 points, they add up quickly. Remember that as long as they are turned in before the chapter test, points will be given!! Those zeros don't have to stay zeros, so check your grades and turn in your late work!!! A lot of times students just skip a few problems, but they don't get completion points unless the assingment is complete!

In math next week we will finish up the chapter on geometry in measurement. Hopefully we will get through the Pythagorean Theorem and Linear Functions before ISATS. I big task, but I think we can do it.

In algebra we are working on Exponential Functions. This is one of my favorite topics in algebra. We will be finishing this chapter next week with a PROJECT!!!

In Algebra this week we have been getting back into full swing after our final last week. We have started our study of exponents, focusing on operations with exponents. Next week we will move on to exponential functions and applications.

In math we have moved into a chapter on geometry and measurement. Students will be using their equation solving skills daily in this chapter. With only a six or so weeks until ISATs we are moving full steam ahead!!

The algebra students will be taking a mid-year final over chapters 1-7 on Thursday and Friday after break. We will be reviewing in class for the first three days of the week before the final. This week in Algebra we have continued our study of systems of equations. We have been working really hard to set up the word problems using our new skill. Some students would still rather use "guess and check", but are coming around to the idea of using equations instead.

In Math we have been continuing to build on our equation solving skills. Students were very happy (hehe) to get to solve multistep equations involving fractions on Thursday. So much so, that we reviewed it again today!! This is always a tough topic for students, as they really don't like fractions. Maybe that could be a New Year's Resolution for them, to once and for all conquer fractions.

This year really seems to be going very quickly. I can't believe that I turned my calendar to December yesterday.

In Algebra we have started solving systems of equations. We have been working really hard on solving word problems. It is pretty amazing how much students love to read, but HATE word problems in math. We will keep up the hard work though.

In Math we are once again solving equations. The equations we have be solving take many steps to solve. Students always seem to groan when they see how much work is involved, but the smile a little to see fewer problems on their homework assignments!

Parent request conferences will be held on Thursday, December 3rd. I know that many of you met with teacher in October, but this is your chance to meet with teachers that you did not meet with then, or to follow up with someone. You can contact the office to schedule a time.

Class Update

This week math students will complete a mini-unit on exponents and Scientific Notation. There will be a test over this information on Monday, November 23rd.

Algebra classes will finish Chapter 6 with a test on Friday this week.

These tests will be the final grade for Trimester 1, which means this is the last chance to raise (or lower) your grade.

It is no secret that MANY students have missed class recently. Catching up with work is a difficult task, but students can make it a little easier on themselves (and their teachers) with these hints.

1. CHECK THE HOMEWORK BLOG!!! Homework is posted nightly by your teachers and you could get a head start by looking here before you even come back.

2. Check the running list in my room. I have been keeping a running list of assignments on my front board since the Friday before Columbus Day. It is an easy way to see what problems were assigned.

3. DON'T PROCRASTINATE!! The longer you put off doing your make-up work and seeing your teachers, the more you will have!

Remember it is your responsibility to get your work and turn it in to your teacher!

Cooler weather has definitely arrived, but hopefully we will get a few more days like Sunday to enjoy. I love the fall, it is my favorite season of the year. Hopefully all of you will get out and enjoy your last few nice days before winter arrives!

In Algebra this week we will take a test on Chapter 3 and begin Chapter 4. I am looking forward to Chapter 4 as it begins our study of Linear Functions. This is where the fun will begin in Algebra. Hopefully students have scraped off all of the cobwebs with our review.

In Math we will be spending the week learning about number properties (commutative, associative, etc.) Most of the week will be spent learning about the distributive property. This is one can be confusing, but by the end of the week all students will be distributing with ease.

Question of the Week

Each week I post a question of the week in my classroom. On Friday I draw a couple of correct answers for 3 extra credit points on a future test. Many students have asked that I post the question on my blog, so here goes.

Jillian visits her friend Doug and then returns home by the same route. She always walks 2km/h when going uphill, 6km/h when going downhill and 3km/h when on level ground. If her total walking time is 6 hours, then what is the total distance she walks in km?

Busy Week

This week is a week full of strange schedules. Tomorrow is an early dismissal for students meaning that all classes are 22 minutes long. Thursday and Friday are also different schedules due to the golf trips. Students need to keep in mind that they will not have the same classes before study hall on those days, so they may need to do their homework at home.

In algebra this week we will finish our chapter on equations and percents. This has been a fast chapter and all review for the students. They have come to eighth grade with a solid foundation, making my job easy so far! If at any time any student feels they could use a little more review of any given topic, they should see me. I have collected many resources over the years and I am sure to have something for them.

In math students got their first tests back. Overall, I was very pleased with the results. Hopefully they keep up the good work! We will continue in the integer chapter this week.

A little overdue!

This has definitely been an exciting start to the school year. I have been so busy getting to know my students and planning for my classes that I have completely forgotten to update my blog!

So what have we been doing? In homebase, we went on our Irons Oaks field trip. My homebase had an awesome facilitator, (not me) so they had a very positive experience and great time. In homebase we have been getting to know each other. Most recently we watched the Black Eyed Peas' Flash Mob dance on Oprah. We thought it was so cool how they got thousands of people to come together and be a part of the performance. If you have not seen it you can find a video of it on YouTube.

In algebra we are sailing along. We are still reviewing, right now focusing on solving equations. Soon we will be into brand new material. (I can't wait, I love to teach them things they have never learned!)

In math students are taking their Chapter 1 test today. We will begin Chapter 2, Integers, tomorrow. They don't know it yet, but this will be a chapter without calculators. (Ut-oh) It really is necessary to assess their understand of operations with positive and negative numbers.

Back into the swing of things

It is so nice to be back into the swing of things at school. I have really enjoyed meeting all of the students and think I have their names down now:)

This is the first school year that I am starting with the Mimio board in my classroom. So far it has been a great tool, especially for going over homework. I can now put the problems and answers on the board so that all students can check their work everyday. This should be helpful for students because they should know everyday how they are doing based on how they did with their homework. (Hopefully they will become more comfortable asking about problems they do not fully understand!)

Math in the news

With such a great response to my first extra credit assignment, I thought I would try it again.

Math is in the news all of the time, so often many don't realize it. Your assignment is:

1. Find a news article from a newpaper or news related website (CNN, Chicagotribune.com, etc.) that has a math term in it.
2. Print out the article and highlight the word(s).
3. Explain what the word means within the context of the article. (only a few sentences.

You may find up to five articles (or different words in one article) for two points each.

Example - from http://edition.cnn.com/2009/HEALTH/04/28/swine.flu.international/
...The median age of all the U.S. cases is 16 years...

This means that the middle age of all cases is 16. This is used over the mean to account for extremes (young or old) on either end.

This extra credit assignment is due NEXT Wednesday, May 6th.

Summer is coming!

In honor of the coming season I am offering an extra credit assignment for any student who reads this and completes the assignment below by Wednesday, April 29th.

Do your own research on the importance of wearing sunscreen. Write a one page paper about ANYTHING to do with sunscreen (which is best, skin cancer prevention...). You must include one graph supporting your paper. Your graph may be self created or something found elsewhere. You might want to find your graph first, then do research. The paper and graph are due by the end of the day Wednesday, April 29th.

In Algebra we are nearing the end of our study of rational functions. We have spent this week performing operations with rational expressions. This is a topic students typically struggle with because it is built on their foundation of knowledge with fractions (the dreaded topic with junior high students!)

In math we have been studying linear functions since right after ISAT tests. It have been a great unit to start using the interactive whiteboard in my classroom. It has really added to the visual explanations in this particular unit. We will finish up this chapter on Friday with a test over all of Chapter 11.

As always the last week before Spring Break will be a busy one. Students in math will have quizzes Tuesday and Friday and students in Algebra will have a test of Chapter 10 on Wednesday.

In math students will continue their study of linear equations. We will spend next week focusing on slope and intercepts. It has been fun using the new mimio board to get the students involved in the lessons. I look forward to the rest of the year and using the new technology to engage students.

In Algebra we will review for the Chapter 10 test on Monday and Tuesday and spend Thursday and Friday studying inverse relations. We will begin using the mimio in class as well!

ISAT testing is over!

This week has been a long one for both the students and teachers. Students have done an outstanding job taking ISATs and deserve a relaxing weekend before starting a new trimester.

Monday starts the third and final trimester for the eighth graders. I am looking forward teaching the students in math during this time. It is a time where most of the math they are learning is new to them and it makes my job really fun!

In math we will be starting our study of linear functions. This is a huge stepping stone to Algebra 1. Success with this chapter will definitely get the students a step ahead in high school.

In Algebra we will be continuing our study of quadratic functions.

All of my classes will be using the new interactive whiteboard all next week in my classroom. (YEA!) I do not have one permanently, but one of the great features of this whiteboard is that it is portable.

ISATS!

This week all students will be taking ISAT tests. It is important that students get a good night sleep and eat a good breakfast each morning. Math homework will be kept to a minimum. This would be a great time to reflect on the past two trimesters and set goals for the third and final trimester of the school year.

Interactive Whiteboard

This week was an exciting week in math. The IMC installed an interactive whiteboard called a Mimio board. Our math classes were the first classes to use this board during class. It does a great job of helping students visualize the three dimensional shapes and their surface area and volume. I am looking forward to using this board with all of my classes soon!

This week in Algebra we continuted to factor polynomials. We will finish Chapter 9 early next week and will take a test on it on Wednesday.

In math we finished Pythagorean Theorem and have started learning about three dimensional solids. Next week we will be finding the surface area and volume of those shapes.

It is like a sport!

How is math like a sport? If you don't practice well, you won't play well. Many students are often surprised, or at least act it, when they don't do well on a test or quiz. They will say something like "I understood what you did in class." Unfortunately, many of them have not spent enough time practicing "doing" problems on their own and therefore, do not do well as they could on their tests.

There are several place to find these problems to do for practice.
1. The odd problems in any section. (Answers are in the back.)
2. Online quizzes and tests for each section. www.classzone.com
3. Any quiz that has been returned. Especially missed problems. It doesn't hurt to do the same problem more than once.
4. Any worksheet or homework assignment that has already been reviewed in class.

Parents, if your child is struggling in math, please encourage them to practice problems from any of the sources to review for quizzes and tests.

Don't they clean up well?

On Friday we had our annual 8th grade ballroom dance. All of the students dressed up for this event and I do have to say that it was nice to look out into a classroom of well dressed students. As always the students impressed a crowd of teachers and parents with their dancing skills.

Below is a picture of my homebase dressed up for the days. (Some of the girls were smart and wore comfortable shoes for the day so their feet would not hurt before the dance!)

Welcome back! Hopefully everyone had a restful and pleasant winter break. I want to take a few minutes to remind everyone of a few ways to keep the rest of the school year going as well as the first half did.

*Make sure to keep up with homework. It is easy to get behind and hard to catch up!
*Stay healthy! It is hard to make up work when you have to miss school. If you do have to stay home sick, make sure to see your teachers as soon as you get back to get what you missed.
*Ask questions when you have them. Your teachers are available before school and during study hall to answer any question you have.

In Algebra we will be finishing Chapter 8 next week.

In Math we will be starting our study of Geometry next week.

Fraction Test

This Wednesday my math classes will have a test over fractions. Students will need to be able to add, subtract, multiply and divide them. Students will also be tested on mean, median and mode. Everyone will be allowed to use a two sided 3.5 by 5 notecard of notes and examples as a resource on the test.

First Trimester Coming to an End

As the first trimester is quickly coming to an end I am beginning to realize how quickly this school year is moving. Now is a great time to take a moment to reflect on the first trimester and set goals for the second trimester. Students should think about their progress in all of their classes and what is and isn't working. Students may not realize how soon teachers have to make recommendations for high school classes, but many of us have to work on them over Winter break. We definititely take into account how students are currently doing in our classes. It is never too late to improve!!

With all of this in mind, I hope everyone has a restful and fun Thanksgiving break. Thanksgiving has always been my favorite holiday and I am looking forward to spending my break with my daughter, my husband and our families.

In Algebra we have finished covering the topics in Chapter Six. Next Wednesday we will have the test over this chapter.

Fraction Frenzy

Students in my math class have started a short chapter on fractions. We will spend time reducing and comparing fractions, as well as working with exponents. Next year in Algebra students will be expected to be comfortable working with fractions. Hopefully this year we can clear up all of the confusion around fractions.

Extra Credit??

The trimester is quickly coming to an end so I have decided to offer a couple of extra credit opportunities for my students in periods 2-8.

1. I have put out extra credit problems in the back of my room. Students may take up to two of the problems to do. They must show their work and have the correct answer to get credit. Each problem is worth 5 points and they may do two. THE PROBLEMS MUST BE STAPLED TO THEIR TEST ON WEDNESDAY 11/5 FOR POINTS. I will not give any points if the student has any missing work for Chapter 3.

2. It has come to my attention that students do not regularly look at their grades online. Many students have no idea what their grade is in my class or what work they are missing. I have decided to offer an incentive for them to look at their grade. If they can write their percentage as of Monday, 11/3, on Wednesday's test, they will receive two extra credit points. I have also encouraged all of my students to take an interest in their grades in all of their classes. I have told them that they should check their grades at least weekly. They should be looking at the assignment grades to make sure that their grades are correct. (I do make mistakes!!) I will offer this opportunity again in the future, but I will not announce it ahead of time.

A Visit to Downers Grove South

This week I made a visit to Downers Grove South to observe 9th grade math classes and talk with the math department. The purpose of this visit is to see how our former students are doing and what we can do to make the transition to high school math as smooth as possible. It was very useful to actually observe the different math classes available for freshmen. I also really enjoyed seeing all of the teachers using SMART boards to present their lessons! I am a little jealous of the students and wish I had been exposed to such great technology when I was in school. I don't feel that old, but we just had chalk and chalkboards in our math classes!! It was also fun to see some of my former students in their math classes. I think they were a little scared I was there to check up on them:)

Barbie Bungee

This week in Algebra students have been working on the Barbie Bungee project. The students conducted an experiment to determine how many rubberbands Barbie would need to safely bungee off the roof of the school. The students did a great job gathering data, making graphs and writing equations to give Barbie (and Ken) a safe, but thrilling jump! Most of the Barbies were able to walk away unscathed, a few however, definitely needed a medic!

Homework Completion

This week in math we were working on simplifying algebraic expressions. Students found that the more they practiced this, the easier it became. Keep up the hard work.

The algebra classes started the chapter on linear functions. We spent most of the week talking about slope. Next week we will be applying that knowledge for equation writing.

On a sad note, unfortunately my homebase did not meet the goal of bringing in a magazine order each. Therefore, there will be no yummy breakfast:(

Integers!!!

The math classes has started the chapter on integers. Students are very sad to hear that they will not be allowed to use calculators during this chapter. I promised them that I would not make them multiply and divide large numbers.:) Students need to make sure to work neatly and not "lose" their negatives!!!!

Chocolate Chip Cookies are soooo good!!

Last week in Algebra we had our own little consumer study. Students sampled chocolate chip cookies to decide which they liked the best. They then had to compile their data and create graphs that would convince consumers that their cookie was the best. Students created graphs by hand and using a computer spreadsheet. Students found that computers can simplify working with data and creating graphs.

Magazine Drive

As you already know we kicked off the annual district magazine drive this week. We have set our school goal at 800 magazines. I am encourage each student in my homebase to bring in just one magazine subscription. If they ALL do so, I have promised them a special breakfast! YUMMY!!

How do I study for a math test?

This question has come up recently as students are thinking about their first math test. The absolute BEST way to study for a math test is to DO problems. Since students have to DO problems on the test, that is how they should prepare.

Where can they find practice problems?
1. Try the odds from sections they have had trouble with during the chapter. (The answers are in the back!)
2. Try the extra practice in the back of the book.
3. Go to www.classzone.com and try a practice quiz or test.
4. Go to www.classzone.com and play a game or use the animated math to reinforce what we are learning.

Students also need to make sure that they are getting feedback on the problems they do for practice. We don't want them to do all of their practice wrong. They need to do problems they can find the answers to easily.

And last but not least, remember I am available before school and during study hall for extra help with whatever is still not clear!

Anyone want to go to Chili's?

Today in Algebra we started our chapter on statistics and proportional reasoning. We started with an activity using percentages. Students had a menu for Chili's and had to simulate going to eat with friends and spliting the bill various ways. Even though it was only 8:00 am, all of the talk of bacon burgers made me hungry!

Week 2 is already over!!

I can't believe we have already finished two weeks of school. It is great to see all of the students getting back into the swing of things with school. I am having a great time getting to know all of my students and really think this will be a great year!

In Algebra we have finished our review of the first two chapters. We are moving very quickly through the beginning of the book to get to the fun stuff. (Hopefully I am not the only one who thinks it is fun!) We will be moving quickly for chapter 3 and 4 as well, and then we will definitely hit the brakes.

In Math we have been reviewing order of operations, exponents, graphing and variables and expressions. I am getting used to the new textbook and so far really like it. Many students have been taking advantage of the online version to do their homework. They have found that having the book online definitely lightens their backpacks!

We are all looking forward to Irons Oaks next Thursday!
